The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) and Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) co-hosted a flood mitigation session over the last weekend in March.
On March 29, a tiger dam training session was held on sm蓹lqm铆x-syilx territory at the Chopaka Bridge. Representatives from the Upper Similkameen Indian Band, Village of Keremeos and Keremeos Volunteer Fire Department, Hedley Fire Department, Town of Oliver and Thompson-Nicola Regional District all participated alongside RDOS and LSIB in a full day of training.
Representatives learned how to properly deploy tiger dams, by learning to fill, stabilize, anchor, stack, drain, take down and store the 24-inch portable water-filled dams.
The training session was part of a joint working group between the governments in the district to purchase two of the tiger dam trailers and be able to deploy them whenever a community is in need of flood-protection.
"Sincere liml蓹mt (thank you) to all the agencies that attended the training, to Flood Control Canada instructors Trevor and Zach, and to the RDOS for also providing lunch for everyone at the course, via Hixzee's Gourmet," LSIB stated on their Facebook page.
A tiger dam training session was also held by RDOS on March 30 in Osoyoos.
