A Vernon man was sent to hospital after being hit in a crosswalk, while RCMP are on the hunt for the driver.

Brody Listhaeghe says he was hit around 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 at the 30th Avenue and 34th Street intersection in downtown Vernon.

"The driver was going north on 34th and went to turn right onto 30th Ave.," Listhaeghe told The Morning Star from Vernon Jubilee Hospital waiting for a CT scan.

"I was going from north to south on the crosswalk, there were five or six other people on it as well but I was the only one hit. We had the walk signal."

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said a blue truck "initially stopped to permit individuals to cross, however the vehicle accelerated into the crosswalk allegedly striking one of the pedestrians on the foot."

Media relations Cpl. Tania Finn said the truck did not stay on scene and no licence plate or driver description was obtained.

Listhaeghe, who is in a leg brace and crutches, said along with running over his foot, the truck bumper twisted his knee outwards and there may be some tendon and/or ligament damage.

"If anyone sees a blue truck with a fresh dent in the hood ask him why he thinks it's OK to blow a red light turning right, hit someone on a crosswalk and then drive off," the victim has posted on social media.

The incident is currently under investigation and, if anyone witnessed the incident who has not already spoken with police, they are requested to contact the Vernon North Okanagan Detachment at (250)545-7171 with their information and quote file number 2025-4305.
