A Vernon man has been charged with a driving-related offence in connection to the death of a Splatsin pedestrian who was fatally struck by a vehicle in Enderby on Canada Day 2023.
Marvyn George Machura has been charged with driving without due care and attention, according to the BC Prosecution Service. He was charged on June 26, 2024, nearly one year after Splatsin elder Harry Jones Jr. was fatally struck while crossing Highway 97A, south of the Splatsin Community Centre.
Jones, 62, was crossing in the marked crosswalk near Canyon Road when he was hit by a Subaru Impreza. He died at the scene.
Jones was a well-known and much-loved man in the Splatsin community, known as a kind person and a talented artist with a colourful personality. Splatsin Coun. Sabrina Vergata said at the time that Jones' death had "severely impacted our entire community."
Jones' death sparked a push for safety improvements at the intersection where he was killed, and in the fall of 2023 a flashing pedestrian light at the intersection was replaced with a full traffic light.
Machura is a well-known local musician who has performed in the Vernon area for years. He has no criminal record, though he had one speeding ticket in Lake Country in October 2020.
Machura appeared in the Salmon Arm Law Courts on Tuesday for a pre-trial conference. He is set to appear again on Feb. 25 to fix a date for a trial.
The charge has yet to be proven in court.
