The organization鈥檚 motto is 鈥楴o Child Sleeps On The Floor In Our Town.鈥
And the Vernon branch of Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) is doing its best to live up to it.
Since its inception, Vernon SHP volunteers have built 180 beds in Vernon and delivered 142 of them, meaning 142 kids aged three to 17 are not sleeping on floors anywhere in the Vernon area.
SHP is a Canadian not-for-profit organization whose goal is to provide new twin beds or bunks to children who don鈥檛 have beds of their own.
鈥淓ach chapter raises funds in their own communities by partnering with local groups, businesses and individuals to make sure these beds are hand-built, outfitted with new mattresses and bedding, and delivered to children in need,鈥 said Leo Campeau, who heads up not only the Vernon chapter but the newly created group in 琉璃神社.
Volunteers are needed in both Vernon and 琉璃神社 to help build the beds. No experience is necessary. When building the beds, volunteers are teamed up with SHP members and go through stations to help put the beds together.
鈥淥ur build days range from individual members from within the community to concerned organizations choosing to host build days, offering volunteers for build days, or sponsoring build days,鈥 said Campeau. 鈥淲e engage all aspect of the community by allowing them to be part of the solution.鈥
