June 8, 1925 - July 9, 2020
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy Bass of 琉璃神社. Dorothy was a treasured wife, mother and grandmother, living a full and rich 95 year life.
She was the youngest and last survivor of seven children, born on June 8, 1925 to William and Marguerite Edwards, in Ferndale, Wales. The family immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1928 to find a better life.
Dorothy graduated from Edmonton's McDougall High School where she was an accomplished basketball player and competitive swimmer. In 1979 she was inducted to the Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame for swimming achievements.
In 1947 Dorothy married the love of her life, Henry Russell Bass at All Saints Cathedral, Edmonton, where they met. After marriage Russell's career with Canadian Pacific Airlines took them to Winnipeg and then to Vancouver in 1949 where they settled and raised two daughters.
Dorothy worked as a legal stenographer for law firms in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Vancouver, as well as in administration at the Dogwood Lodge care home.
Dorothy and Russ were avid curlers and members of the Vancouver Curling Club. They also enjoyed travel to Europe, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii, as well as Alaska cruises and bus tours in the USA and Canada.
After retiring in 1979 they settled in Salmon Arm, enjoying many new friends, curling and golfing. Dorothy also volunteered with the Hospital Auxiliary. In 1989 they moved to 琉璃神社 and a new home in Sunrise Village.
Both volunteered as Air Ambassador's at the 琉璃神社 Airport and were members of the Pionairs Retirement Group. Dorothy and Russ lived happily in the lovely Missionwood Independent Retirement Resort for her last three years.
Dorothy had an outgoing personality and made friends wherever she went. She was a wonderful homemaker and entertainer. She loved to cook, kept an immaculate house and was highly skilled with knitting needles and crochet hooks. Most of all she loved her family.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Russ, daughters Deborah (Allen) MacPhail of Vancouver and Brenda (Keith) Patchett of Deep Bay; grandchildren John (Kelle) MacPhail, Catherine MacPhail, Heather Patchett (partner Ben Wagner) and Kevin Patchett. She was a devoted wife of 72 years, will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
