September 14, 1925 - March 4, 2023
Henry was born September 14, 1925, in Mount Olie, B.C., and died in 琉璃神社, B.C. on March 4, 2023, at the age of 97. Henry's father, Thorvald, a CNR Section Foreman, brought Henry and the family to 琉璃神社 when Henry was 6 months old, where the family of five lived for a while in a box car on a railroad siding.
Henry is survived by Phylis, his loving wife of 74 years, sons Brian and Ron (Wende), daughters Louise (Andy), Shirley (Les), 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents Thorvald and Elizabeth, brothers Carl and Jim, and his granddaughter, Sarah.
Henry loved sports and he was good at them! At KSS, Henry played basketball and lacrosse, and although he was offered a minor league contract to play baseball in the Boston Red Sox organization, he chose to attend university and play basketball for the UBC Thunderbirds.
Back in 琉璃神社, Henry started off his working life as a gas jockey, but he worked hard and became a fuel distributor for Royalite, Philips 66, and eventually, PetroCanada, operating his business as HR Tostenson Ltd. from 1950 until he passed.
Henry gave back to his community by coaching and managing baseball players for many, many years, in both senior and youth leagues. He was known for bringing the Babe Ruth Baseball Program to 琉璃神社 and was responsible for bringing the original lights to Elks Stadium. In recognition, Henry was honoured civically and provincially with induction into the Sports Hall of Fame.
Henry also had a passion for travel, going all over the world with Phylis and friends. At home, Henry was an avid gardener and especially loved his roses! Golf also became a passion and he played with family and friends until his last season at 96!
FAMILY, FRIENDS, and FAITH .... our DAD!
