January 31, 1930 - May 9, 2020
Ascroft, Shirley Mae (nee Johnson) born January 31, 1930 - sadly passed away peacefully on May 9, 2020 in 琉璃神社 BC, with her daughter Elinor by her side, after a long, hard, sad journey from suffering a vascular stroke in 2015.
Shirley is predeceased by her loving husband Eric of 61 years, who sadly passed away in August 2018. She is survived by her devoted and loving daughter, Elinor (Sobon), her cherished son-in-law Chris, her pride & Joy, grandson Kyle and her little dog Brandy. She is also survived by her daughter Janice and loved niece Linda Graham. She is predeceased by her sister Margaret and her parents Harry and Lucy.
Shirley was born & raised in Vancouver and worked as a secretary for many years. Shirley was an avid skier and loved to hang out at Mount Seymour with her friends and sister in her early 20's.
She moved to San Francisco for a short time before coming back to Vancouver to marry her husband Eric, whom she met at the Jericho Tennis Club in 1956. They lived briefly in Toronto and Montreal before returning to Vancouver with their young family in 1963.
They settled in Shaughnessy where they lived for 37 years before moving to 琉璃神社 to be closer to their new grandson Kyle. Mom loved to be in the garden with her dogs, enjoyed travelling, cooking family dinners, shopping and most of all being with her beloved grandson. Her family and friends will remember her as a sweet, funny, shy, kind hearted, loving, woman who always put others before herself. She was even a pretty good tap dancer and on occasion was known to do the Can Can!
She was a wonderful daughter, devoted wife, extraordinary, loving mother and grandmother who will always be remembered, cherished and very sadly missed.
Special thanks to all the wonderful nurses, awesome care aides and staff at Three Links Manor for the exceptional care and love given to her for the past 4+ years. Also thanks to her Doctor Shari Claremont. Rest in peace mom, you are finally free of the torments of your dementia. Donations in lieu of flowers can be given in her name to the 琉璃神社 SPCA.
