To the editor:

Webster鈥檚 dictionary defines a politician (disparagingly) as a 鈥減erson primarily interested in political office for selfish or other narrow usually short-sighted reasons.鈥 In order for a politician, and a political party, to be successful, he, she, or it, must be able to convince the voting public that they, and their party knows best on how to spend your money.

In addition, we often experience the successful party forming a majority government with 40 per cent or less, of the popular vote, leaving the rest of the voting public essentially unrepresented. (What was that old saying?鈥 No taxation without representation.)

Remember, governments have no money of their own. All their money comes from us, the taxpayers, whether they voted for the successful party in power or not. Such is the art of politics and why many people lose interest at election time. Nothing changes.
