As the Okanagan reaches the halfway point of a hot summer, here鈥檚 something to keep in mind鈥aving your empty cans and bottles can help save a life.
One of the lesser known ways to help animals is by taking your beverage empties back to any of the Valley鈥檚 Return It locations. (Which are located in 琉璃神社, Armstrong, Vernon, West 琉璃神社, Peachland, Penticton and Oliver.)
Money from your cans and bottles can be directly donated to the Okanagan Humane Society, and just 3000 empties can help save the life of an animal in their care.
The average cost of care for an animal at OHS is $300. At 10 cents per can/bottle, your summer gatherings/parties/general good times can have the added bonus of helping an animal in need of medical care, food and supplies.
The goal of collecting 3000 cans could be a great summer project for kids looking for something to do.
For instructions on how to donate your recyclables to OHS, check out the video at the following link:
Another easy way to support OHS is through the 3% Club at Nature鈥檚 Fare. Every receipt you mail to OHS gets submitted by us and we receive 3% back. So if your family spends $3000 a year at Nature鈥檚 Fare on average, we get $100 back. If three families do this, we get $300 to save a life! Use the mailing address on our website to mail in receipts at any time. More information can be found here:
You can also donate your Canadian Tire money to OHS through Triangle Rewards. When you are at checkout give the cashier or type in on the self checkout the phone number on our website. The Triangle Rewards points will go to us and we use them to purchase supplies for our rescue efforts and for the animals in our care.
And one of the most direct ways to help is by donating to the Spay It Forward program at participating vet clinics. You make a donation right at the vet clinic, the money you donate stays with that clinic and allows them to provide medical services for OHS animals. The full list of our veterinary partners can be found on the OHS website.
Every bottle, every dollar raised makes a difference to the Okanagan鈥檚 homeless animals. On their behalf, we thank you for your support.
