Johansen joins AHL’s Bears

Rockets defenceman heads to Hershey to play with Washington’s AHL affiliate

Like his ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç Rockets’ teammate Dillon Dube, Lucas Johansen will finish up his season in the American Hockey League.

The 19-year-old defenceman has signed an amateur tryout contract with the Hershey Bears, the American affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

A first-round pick of the Caps, 28th overall in the 2016 NHL draft, Johansen posted 41 points in 68 games with the Rockets this season, and anotter eight points in 17 playoff games. He signed a three-year, entry-level deal with Washington on Mar. 2 that begins in the 2017-18 season.

Johansen will join the Bears for their second round AHL playoff matchup, a seven-game-series against the Providence Bruins.

Johansen and the Rockets were ousted from the WHL playoffs Sunday night by the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Earlier in the day, the Stockton Thunder, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, announced they’ve signed Dube to an amateur tryout contract. Dube was a second round choice of the Flames, 56th overall, in last summer’s draft.
