Contributed The Marathon of Sport 琉璃神社 has been moved from the spring to fall in 2017.

The popular local sporting event benefiting Special Olympic athletes鈥攎otionball Marathon of Sport鈥攊s turning the page on its summer event and starting a new chapter this fall.

Popular among young professionals, this jam-packed day of sports has typically taken place in June, but is being moved to September as of this year.

The charity鈥檚 local Board of Directors believes this new date will allow for more participant teams and Special Olympic athletes to take part in the annual event.

鈥淛une is a busy time of year for most,鈥 said Donnie Ungaro, co-event director for motionball 琉璃神社. 鈥淲hether it鈥檚 vacation, work priorities, other events of interest, or tournaments for the Special Olympics athletes, there is a ton going on for many of those who are interested in participating.鈥

The charity event was previously scheduled for the same date as Tedx 琉璃神社 and Fat Cat Children鈥檚 Festival 鈥 both popular events for motionball鈥檚 demographic.

鈥淲e are excited about this new event date,鈥 explains Ungaro. 鈥淚n September we still have excellent weather and it is an awesome time of year for sports.

鈥淲e expect this year鈥檚 Marathon of Sport to be even better than years prior, and have high hopes to exceed our $85,000 fundraising goal for Special Olympics.鈥

Ungaro and the rest of motionball 琉璃神社鈥檚 event supporters are urging individuals and businesses to mark September 23, 2017 in their calendars.

鈥淚f you haven鈥檛 been to a Marathon of Sport yet, we highly recommend give it a try,鈥 says Ungaro. 鈥淚t is a great team building activity for businesses, and an excellent way to meet new people.

鈥淐ome play alongside Special Olympic athletes, get outside and see firsthand the impact that this event has on the athlete鈥檚 lives. You do not need to be good at sports to play, motionball is a non-competitive, no-stress event for people who want to have fun and make a difference.鈥

Locally, motionball Marathon of Sport 琉璃神社 has raised over $230k net over the past five years for Special Olympics British Columbia and nationally motionball events across Canada have raised over $1.2 million as of 2016 in support of the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.
