Winners will represent the Interior during provincials, Aug. 23-25

It was a game, set, match weekend for the Salmon Arm Tennis Club as they hosted the 2024 Tennis BC Interior Team Tennis Championships on Saturday, July 6.

In addition to three local teams, contenders came from Vernon, 琉璃神社 and Lake Country to battle it out for a berth in Provincials, to be held in Burnaby Aug. 23 to 25.

With team tennis, doubles and individuals competed in individual matches with their scores going to a collective team total, with the first to win four points crowned the winner.

The event, which ran from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. started with some playing the outdoor courts, before all matches moved inside the Askew's Tennis Centre as temperatures rose to 32 C amid a heat warning from Environment Canada.

In the men's category, the 琉璃神社 team of Caleb Jones, Jin Choi, Bobbi Nicholat, Shardul Kara and Brad Perrault defeated a Salmon arm squad, with the deciding match being won by Kara and Nicholat with a 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5) score.

There were two women's events, in the 3.5 and the 4.0 level. Winners were the 琉璃神社 Ladies who Lob in the 4.0 category and Kamloops Racquettes in the 3.5 category.

Tournament director Marianne VanBuskirk said "the event could not have been as successful as it was without the generous commitment of time by several volunteers, along with the donations of food by Salmon Arm athletes."
