Wind and rain couldn’t stop determined dragon boaters in Salmon Arm.
The Shuswap Dragon Boat Festival was held at Marine Peace Park Saturday, June 24, with races starting at 9 a.m. and continuing until around 2 p.m.
Teams from Vernon, Kamloops, ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç, and Penticton joined the three Salmon Arm teams at the wharf, battling choppy waves and heavy winds. Fellow boaters and spectators said conditions were difficult but applauded each other for a job well done in each race.
Women’s and mixed divisions race a 500-metre course on Shuswap Lake.
The festival is hosted by the Shuswap Rowing and Paddling Club, in partnership with the Penticton Dragon Boat Society.
The last race is scheduled to hit the water around 2 p.m., but morning races did begin a little later than scheduled.
Awards will be handed out around 3 p.m.
