A Vernon girls hockey team brought home the gold medal at a major Okanagan tournament.

The Lakers U11 recreation team conquered the Alley’s Angels tournament, hosted in ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç over the March 15 weekend, in spectacular fashion.

Vernon defeated Abbotsford twice (11-2, 9-5), Surrey (4-0) and Trail (9-4) on their way to the final, where they faced the ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç Rockets.

After scoring four of the first five goals, the hometown Rockets were sitting pretty, up 4-1 heading into the third period.

It was then where the Lakers offense finally took off, as goals from Taysa Robins and Luna Whitney brought the goal deficit to just one. With 42 seconds left in the game, Indy Hardy would tie the game up to send it to overtime.

At the 3:19 mark of the extra frame, it was Hardy again, scoring her second of the night to win the tournament for the Lakers.

Throughout the long season, the Lakers have amassed a record of 22-11-1 in the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association. In their league playoffs, Vernon finished third, after losing to Lumby 3-2 in the second vs. third playoff game on Sunday, March 10.
