Vernon group in gear for 50th year of getting outdoors

Outdoors Club getting people active year-round with snowshoeing, cycling and hiking

For half a century now, the Vernon Outdoors Club (VOS) has been offering year-round activities that get people outside while meeting new friends and building a healthy lifestyle.

Current president Rudi van Zwaaij tried the club in 2014 and has never looked back.

He was impressed by the vast range of outdoor activities to choose from, but especially that all events are well organized and run by volunteer leaders.

"It is encouraged that most of our members volunteer in one capacity or another, which lightens the load of the program coordinators and makes each event unique," said van Zwaaij of the 250 to 300 members annually.

When winter snowshoeing comes to an end in March, the VOC will again offer several programs from April 1 to Oct. 31 that include cycling, rambling and hiking.

"In Vernon and the North Okanagan, we are blessed to be surrounded by wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities in all geographic directions," said Zwaaij.

The Thursday biking program caters to various levels of cycling enthusiasts with different routes planned each week.

The groups ride at a moderate pace on paved roads but can include easier off-road trails and on many days there is a choice of shorter or longer rides.

In September there is an opportunity to take part in a week-long bike camp, near Christina Lake this year.

"On Tuesdays we ramble, which are generally shorter and easier hikes of five to 12 kilometres in length at a moderate pace, often followed by an optional social," said Zwaaij. "A great way to meet new friends and stay active."

Sunday is hiking day and as the season progresses these hikes also progress in challenge from shorter local hikes, early and late season, to more challenging longer hikes of 12 to 20 kilometres at higher elevations in the summer.

Often there are choices on the same day to take part in a more moderate or more challenging hike.

"If you have never hiked in the Monashee Mountains, please come along as you will be amazed."

In July the VOC puts on a week-long hike camp, which this year will be in Cranbrook.

As part of community service, the VOC is active in maintaining all its trails to ensure they are safe for the enjoyment of users throughout the year.

If you would like to become a member or need more information, visit  and/or check out the AGM Tuesday, March 25, 6:30 p.m. at the Schubert Centre.

The club would like to attract younger members that have a passion for the great outdoors.
