Vernon player lifts Grand Forks to KIJHL Finals lead over Revelstoke

Tyler Burke scores three times in first two games of league final

Vernon's Tyler Burke and the Grand Forks Border Bruins are in control of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League's best-of-seven Teck Cup championship.

Burke had three goals in the first two games on home ice, helping the Border Bruins to a 2-0 lead over the defending Cup champion Revelstoke Grizzlies.

Burke scored 57 seconds after the national anthem in Game 2 Wednesday, April 9. Then, with the game tied 2-2 after two periods, he watched his teammates score three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes for a 5-2 victory over the Bears.

The 20-year-old forward scored twice in the Border Bruins' series-opening 7-3 romp Tuesday, April 8, at the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena.

Burke has 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in 15 post-season games.

The series now shifts to the Revelstoke Forum for Games 3 and 4 Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and April 13.

Grand Forks has never won the Teck Cup and has appeared in the KIJHL final only once, back in 1974, where they lost to the Cranbrook Colts.

The Grizzlies are seeking their fourth championship since 2019, and are appearing in their eighth Teck Cup final.

The winner of the series will advance to meet the champions of the Pacific Junior Hockey League, the Ridge Meadows Flames, in the best-of-five Mowat Cup series that will determine the Provincial Junior A Tier 2 champion.

The Flames will host Games 1 and 2 of the 2025 Mowat Cup championship before the series shifts to the KIJHL champion for the remaining contests, including Games 4 and 5 if necessary.
