The Hudson鈥檚 Bay Company, established in 1670, has had a strong presence in the history and development of what is now Canada. 

Its history is at times uncomfortable, as the fur trade exploited many Indigenous people across what is now Canada. The trade also introduced viruses which took a toll on Indigenous populations who did not have immunity to them, the loss of traditional cultures, the introduction of alcohol and more. 

The fur trade drove the expansion and development of Canada, and the legacy of this period in history can still be seen today. 

Today, 355 years after it was founded, the Hudson鈥檚 Bay Company is in creditor protection and its future is not known.
