The date has been set for byelections in Lake Country.

Byelections will be held in the Oyama ward and Carr鈥檚 Landing ward June 24.

Nomination packages are available at lakecountry.bc.ca or at the municipal office.

鈥淣omination documents must be filed between 9 a.m. May 9 and 4 p.m. May 19,鈥 said Reyna Seabrook, chief elections officer.

Candidates do not have to live in the jurisdiction in which they are running for office. However, in order to be nominated as a Candidate, they require two nominators who must be qualified electors in the jurisdiction they are running in.

鈥淔or example, an individual running in Oyama must have two nominators that are qualified electors of Oyama,鈥 said Seabrook.

If elected to office, the successful candidate will be expected to serve a 16-month term which officially begins by being sworn in at the public Council Meeting on July 4, 2017.

Besides general election day June 24, advance polls will be held June 14 and 20 in both wards. Only qualified electors in Oyama will be voting for the Oyama ward councillor and qualified electors in Carr鈥檚 Landing will be voting for the Carr鈥檚 Landing ward councillor.

Electors from other parts of Lake Country will not be invited to vote in this byelection,鈥 said Seabrook.

The byelections are required because of the death of Oyama councillor Owen Dickie and the resignation of Matt Vader from council to join district staff.
