Vernon Christian School's Make Way expansion project has received a positive challenge.

A donor wishing to remain anonymous has come forward, saying they will match all donations to the project until June 1, up to $400,000.

If the challenge is met, the school will have met its $2 million target to break ground on the expansion.

Currently, the school has raised $1.2 million.

"Meeting the challenge will allow us to get shovels in the ground once all of the permits are received," said Steve Gutknecht, Vernon Christian School's director of development. "The permit process is underway. Our overall fundraising goal is $3 million."

The 50-year-old private school announced in January its expansion plans which includes more classrooms, a high-school gymnasium, and additional parking.

Expansion is necessary due to continuous growth. The current enrolment is close to full capacity, and student numbers have increased by 50 per cent over the past 10 years.

The school is home to 470 Kindergarten-to-Grade 12 students.

The goal is to break ground this year.

Funding will be done through a combination of mortgage financing and charitable donations, and a major capital campaign is currently underway to support Make Way.
