A Maternal Care Centre is now a reality in Agarfa, Ethiopia, thanks to a local group making health and education improvements.
Partners in Ethiopia (PIE), an Enderby-based group, funded the construction of a 12-bed Maternal Care Centre that provides safe birthing and pre- and post-natal care for mothers and infants.
Woinshet Bayssie, founder of PIE, learned of the need for a new child birth facility in 2017.
鈥淚 was shocked at the poor conditions of the facility. We have kept the goal of a new centre in our hearts and have now succeeded. It is finally here," said Bayssie. "I know from my visit to Agarfa in October that the community is so very grateful for the new facility.鈥
Over the last year, $100,000 was raised to complete the construction of the facility.
The community of Agarfa contributed an additional $15,000 through in-kind labour, materials, engineering expertise, and a solar system for the centre.
Fundraising efforts are ongoing to acquire essential start-up equipment and hospital beds. To date more than $8,000 has been raised towards the $20,000 goal.
In addition to this milestone, PIE provided school supplies for 125 children and school uniforms for 80 students in 2024.
These uniforms, a requirement for school attendance, were purchased from local tailors, further supporting the community鈥檚 economy.
Last year鈥檚 successes are due to the hard work and vision of PIE鈥檚 six dedicated committee members, the Ethiopian partner organization Vision for Bright Future, the 20 volunteers who supported a 2023 fundraising dinner, and the generous donations from numerous individuals and organizations, including the Salmon Arm Rotary, Kal Rotary (Vernon), Mission Rotary (琉璃神社), Enderby Lions Club and Rose Charities.
Looking ahead, PIE aims to refocus on supporting education by continuing to provide school supplies and uniforms.
Additionally, the group is exploring ways to assist three students in pursuing post-secondary education.
While tuition is free, expenses for travel, living, and textbooks present significant barriers.
PIE is committed to finding solutions to help these students achieve their academic dreams.
"Your support makes these achievements possible," said Bayssie, encouraging the North Okanagan to donate, volunteer or spread the word about PIE's work. "Together, we can continue to create opportunities and improve lives in Agarfa, Ethiopia."
