A local veteran, moved by a film documenting the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in Afghanistan, has helped bring the movie to Vernon.

Siobhan Calnan served in Afghanistan twice as a critical care nursing officer with CAF. Calnan had the opportunity to see the film Fallen Heroes: Their Journey Home at a West 琉璃神社 showing last September and was incredibly moved by it.

"There were so many familiar faces and names that memories came flooding back. I left the showing attended by approximately 30 people determined to find a way for more Canadians to see it."

Calnan reached out to the producer Karen Storwick and The Towne Theatre in Vernon. The theatre operations manager, Scott John, is a CAF veteran too. Both were eager to set up another showing in time for Remembrance Day. 

The Towne Theatre presents Fallen Heroes: Their Journey Home on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at

"The film is an incredibly powerful tribute to our fallen told in the first person and through footage and reenactments," said Calnan. "It focuses on the development of the ramp ceremony as a modern tradition for our forces to say farewell to their friends and comrades on their journey home. I attended ramp ceremonies for 26 brave Canadians in the short times I was deployed. We lost 165 Canadians in Afghanistan. The film also focuses on the outpouring of support from everyday Canadians along the Highway of Heroes and their impact on the fallen鈥檚 family members."
