SumoBots brought lots of excitement to UBC Okanagan鈥檚 Commons building on May 22.
Around 200 Grade 4 to 9 students from Central Okanagan Public Schools participated in the Lego robot tournament.
In teams, the students learn to build and code their own robot in the weeks leading up to the tournament. The goal of each match is to push your opponent out of the ring.
The day started with a round-robin before heading into sudden death rounds. The top four teams were awarded prizes.
SD23 Learning Technology Consultant Tobias Blaskovits said the kids walk away from these events with new skills to take into the future.
鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of problem solving that they have to do and thinking on the fly,鈥 Blaskovits said students will update their code throughout the tournament in hopes of improving the performance of their bot.
Helping out with the day was the Boucherie Bears Robotics team overseeing all of the matches.
