The North Okanagan Valley Gleaners have reached the 100 million mark in servings of donated food.

After 12 years, the North Okanagan Valley Gleaners (NOVG) has reached a landmark milestone.

The society officially passed the delivery of 100 million servings of food to feed the world's hungry.

"This amazing achievement could not have been accomplished without the tremendous support of all those that donate food to us," said outreach team lead Gene Bryant. "The biggest thank you goes to our volunteers. Their dedication, drive and commitment to help those less fortunate is on display every single day."

NOVG was created in 2007 to help distribute food to countries who need it the most. Distribution is done through "reputable and established" Christian aid organizations, with several volunteers helping to chop, clean and prepare produce for dehydration and packaging. The Gleaner's Used Furniture and Appliances Store turns donated items into the funding needed to sustain food and medical-aid donations programs.

Since 2012, NOVG has shipped 101,680,000 servings of food, received nearly 1.3 million pounds of donated produce, while processing between 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of vegetables a day. The society supports over 25 social service agencies in Vernon, helping those in need locally by providing furniture free of charge.

Ukraine, Guatemala, North Korea, Romania and Cuba are the top five countries who have received the food aid.

A customer appreciation day at their Vernon store (4405 29th Street) is on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

NOVG is always looking for more volunteers and those interested can email: NOVgleanersstore@gmail.com.
