Several Salmon Arm elementary students slipped into turnout gear several sizes too large for a bit of hands-on firefighter training.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, students chosen by their schools paid Fire Hall 2 for a visit to take part in the city fire department's annual Fire Chief for a Day event.
After helping the students into firefighting gear, Salmon Arm Fire Chief Brad Shirley, Lt. Tyler Stevenson and firefighter Chris Scarborough took them outside to let them try their hands at accurately aiming a fire hose, learning how to properly use a fire extinguisher and give them a lift in the ladder truck. The students also received a tour of the hall.
Afterwards, the young fire chiefs received certificates and pizza for lunch.
