Project Literacy hosted a fundraiser barbecue in 琉璃神社 on Sept. 26, 2024.

Beef and veggie burgers were sold in 琉璃神社's Landmark District over lunch on Sept 26 to raise funds for Project Literacy.

Executive director Paul Zuurbier said they aimed to raise around $1,500 to $2,000.

"This is our 8th year doing the barbecue," Zuurbier said. "We do it every September during Raise a Reader Month."

The funds go toward the children's literacy program.

Lunch included chips and a juice or pop.

Project Literacy assists readers of all ages in boosting their skills and confidence.

"We have more immigrants and refugees where English is their second language," Zuurbier said. "It is a challenge for children because the way the school curriculum is set up is they expect that there's some reading support at home. If the parents don't provide reading support because they don't have a grasp of the English language yet then the children aren't getting the additional support that they need."

Project Literacy also helps adults who are interested in improving their English literacy.
