Smiles and colours shine bright as Vernon women unite for Diwali

Approximately 70 women and children turn out for Diwali Celebration at People Place

Colourful saris, sweet and savoury spices, joy and laughter filled the room as Diwali was celebrated by women and children in Vernon.

Harpreet Deol organized a Diwali Celebration at People Place in Vernon on Oct. 25, with about 70 in attendance.

There was dancing in Indian style, sweet and savoury food of Asian flavours and spices and games for children.

Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee wished everyone a joyful Diwali filled with love and light.

She explained that Diwali is the Festival of Light honouring the victory of light over darkness, love over hate, and hope over despair.

All the religions of India have a similar celebration around the same time of year, which is also the harvest season.

"As we light our diyas, let us embrace the spirit of peace, compassion, and unity," said Sandu, who held a candle. "Diwali reminds us of the power in spreading kindness and resilience, especially in times that feel uncertain. May this season bring warmth, joy, and an abundance of light to your life, filling it with colours as vibrant as the Diwali lights."
