Vernon pipe band calling on former members

Vernon pipe band hosting 40th reunion in November

The pipes are calling for Danny Boy.

And any other boys, girls, men, and women with connections to a pair of Vernon pipe bands.

The Kalamalka Highlanders Pipe Band is celebrating its 40th anniversary at Vernon's Army Navy Air Force Hall on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m., and organizers are trying to track down former band members, as well as former members of the Arran Campbell Memorial Youth Pipe Band. The youth band was affiliated with the Kalamalka Highlanders.

"Both bands have been heavily involved in the community for years," said event spokesperson Tom Skinner.

The two pipe squads have played Remembrance Day ceremonies, Canada Day events in Polson Park, fundraisers such as Run For the Cure, Do It For Dad, both in support of cancer research. They have played for the Kidney Foundation's walk and have been a fixture in the Vernon Winter Carnival Parade and the Carnival event Bandarama.

"Pipers and drummers have supported many local charities by playing at events like auctions, golf and basketball tournaments, and hockey games," said Skinner. "Perhaps the longest continuous fundraiser we've been involved with has been the Santa's Anonymous Christmas Toy Drive."

If you can help with a phone number or an email address, or if you plant to attend, contact Wendy Solmes at 250-545-7339. Solmes is one of the founding members of the Kalamalka Highlanders.

"We would love to see people in person if that's possible," said Skinner.

If former members can't make it, they are asked to email Skinner at . He will send information and an update sheet so the members can tell others what's happening with them, and if they're still playing pipes or drums.
