琉璃神社's Gospel Mission is proudly serving up the community while supporting its ongoing programs for the city's unhoused.
Executive director Carmen Rempel said the organization tried to launch a food truck about two years ago without success. After a request came in from crews working construction on Leon Ave the decision was made to relaunch.
"For us, the capital cost to start up this business were quite low," said Rempel, adding the truck was donated to the mission and just needed a little renovating.
The food truck opened in April to bring money into the organization. In its first quarter, Rempel said the truck brought in $30,000 in revenue.
"Revenues from the food truck actually go to supporting a very particular program. It goes to supporting our employment program," said Rempel. "We've been able to employ two of our shelter residents to be able to work with the food services team supporting the truck."
The food truck will continue to operate wherever there is a demand for them around the city.
