A hotel proposed to be built next to 琉璃神社 International Airport (YLW) will be allowed to climb to six storeys.

City council approved the change, along with allowing larger signage for the building, at a public hearing on Tuesday (Nov. 5) night.

The 245 suite Sutton Place Hotel, with a restaurant, and banquet facilities, is planned for property that is currently the ready lot for car rental operations. The development includes 195 parking stalls. A 1,000-stall parkade will eventually be constructed next to the hotel.

Structures near the airport are typically restricted to three storeys, however, developer Northland Properties obtained the required approvals from YLW, Transport Canada, and NAV Canada.

Council also approved requested changes to the size of a canopy sign (from 3.86 m虏 to 16.56 m虏) and a fascia sign (from 4.0 m虏 to 29.47 m虏).

鈥淟ooking forward to this project opening,鈥� Mayor Tom Dyas said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be a nice addition to our community, as many individuals travelling through our airport will be able to have that direct link.鈥�

Council voted unanimously in favour of the requested changes. Councillor Maxine DeHart recused herself from the discussion and vote, stating that she works in the hotel industry.

Construction of the hotel is expected to begin in 2025.
