Celebration of life for Vernon teen open to public

Lynza Henke tragically died after the Vernon teen was struck in a crosswalk.

The life of Vernon's Lynza Henke is being celebrated this Saturday at the Creekside Conference Centre. 

Henke,15, died after being struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk in July. She had been on life support, until Aug. 17, when her family announced that she succumbed to her injuries. 

The funeral service will be open to the public and live-streamed, via  on Saturday, Aug. 24. The service will commence from the Creekside Conference Centre, starting at 11 a.m. 

"Although we do not understand why Lynza was taken from us at 15 years of age, we are very thankful for the years that we had her," her obituary reads. "We need to learn to not put a question mark where God put a period."

There has been an outpouring of community support for Vernon Teach and Learn, which is the local business run by Henke's family. 

More than 1,400 individuals and businesses have commented on a social media post, offering their condolences in the wake of the tragedy. 

"Our hearts are breaking and we can only hope, in time, that your loving memories sustain and sooth your heartache," said neighbouring downtown business Olive Us Oil and Vineger Tasting Room.

The Downtown Vernon Association added that "our hearts are broken and every single one of us here send our thoughts and prayers."

Henke was struck by a truck in a marked crosswalk on July 20 while on a run to buy ingredients to make fudge. She was transported to BC Children's Hospital in critical condition. 

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP says the crash remains under investigation.
