The upper portion of Knox Mountain Park remains closed due to the small roadside fire that took place on Tuesday afternoon. Recreational users are now allowed to access all areas of the park, but due to the extreme fire hazard, vehicle traffic will not be allowed past the upper gate.
Residents and visitors will still be able to access the first lookout on Knox Mountain by vehicle; however, individuals wishing to go further up the mountain will have to do so by foot or bike.
鈥淯ntil the fire danger rating improves, we are closing the upper gate to vehicle traffic,鈥 said Blair Stewart, City of 琉璃神社 urban forestry supervisor.
鈥淧ark users and neighbours are asked to be vigilant, and anyone who notices smoke or fire in any park should immediately call 9-1-1 to speak to the fire department or *5-5-5-5 on your cell phone for the BC Wildfire Management Branch.鈥
Residents and visitors are reminded that campfires and barbecues are not permitted in city or regional district parks, with the exception of barbecues on beaches. Smoking is also prohibited in all parks and public spaces.
Residents living near natural areas may be interested in learning how to mitigate fire risk on their property. The 琉璃神社 Fire Department has developed the caretaker鈥檚 house on the top of Knox Mountain to provide a real demonstration of the ideal property conditions.
