Less than three weeks after getting married, a retiree is being accused of attempting to murder his wife in Keremeos.

Brian Gene Reum, 68, made his first appearance in Penticton Provincial Court on Sept. 25 for the charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

The charges both date to an incident allegedly on March 28, 2024.

According to a separate civil claim filed in Penticton Supreme Court by the victim, on that day, Reum allegedly came up behind his wife and attempted to cut her throat with a serrated hunting knife.

He then allegedly turned the knife on himself.

The March incident was not the first alleged incident listed in the court documents, which also claim that on Feb. 20, just 18 days after the couple married, Reum attempted multiple times to smother his wife with a pillow.

The civil claim was filed in July, and Reum has not filed a responds to it.

A claim and counterclaim were filed in family court in April, however, those details are not accessible to the public.
