Penticton officially recognized as 'bat-friendly community'

Leaders from BC Community Bat Programs with Penticton City Council after the municipality was certified as a "bat-friendly community" on April 22.

The City of Penticton says it has taken the necessary steps to become a certified "bat-friendly community."

In a press release on April 23, city officials said the BC Community Bat Programs designation highlights Penticton's commitment to fostering a healthy ecosystem.

鈥淭his certification underscores our commitment to preserving local wildlife and fostering a harmonious environment for all species," said Mayor Julius Bloomfield.

Over the past two years, the city has installed bat boxes and guano catchers to provide roosting opportunities for bats. It also has developed educational resources such as the "Bat Edu-Kit" and "Batpack" while including information about bats on its 

As part of its certification, Penticton City Council proclaimed April 17, 2025, as Bat Appreciation Day, and Oct. 24 to 31, 2025 as National Bat Week.

"We are delighted to recognize Penticton as a certified bat-friendly community,鈥 said Paula Rodriguez de la Vega, a local coordinator with BC Community Bat Programs. 鈥淭his achievement highlights the city's dedication to bat conservation and the protection of vital habitats that support these important species."

She added that the South Okanagan has the highest number of bat species in Canada, with at least 10 currently at risk due to low reproductive rate.

Other "bat-friendly" communities in B.C. include Peachland, Delta, Comox and Langley.
