Being a police dog handler is, in and of itself, a very demanding job. Constant training and working with your K9 partner takes up a lot of time. Add to that the commitments to family and the odd bit of sleep and there's not much time left in the day.
For Const. Reg Sahay, however, that little bit of time that remains he spends generously giving back to his community.
It is this contribution that earned him the International Order of Daughters of the Empire (IODE) RCMP Community Service Award with which he was honoured last week at the 琉璃神社 RCMP Detachment. The award was presented by Gladys Retzlaff, Citizenship Convenor of the IODE 琉璃神社 to Cst. Sahay for his involvement with youth in the community.
Sahay is a year round coach/trainer in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for youth aged 8 to 14 and volunteers three to four times each week at a local jiu jitsu club.
He is also an active member of the 琉璃神社 Minor Football Association under 10 Division and is the head coach for Spring Flag Football and co head coach for tackle football under 10 Division. In these roles Sahay instructs youth on skill development, teamwork and sportsmanship.
On top of all this Sahay is also a member of the Okanagan Mission Youth Soccer Association and is head coach of a youth boys soccer team.
Const. Sahay brings his life experience, considerable skills and passion for sports to positively influence the lives of young people. In doing so, he also fosters a positive relationship between police and the community he serves.
"Const. Sahay is a tireless volunteer and supporter of youth as well as an excellent police officer," said 琉璃神社 RCMP Superintendent Nick Romanchuk, Officer in Charge of the 琉璃神社 Regional Detachment. " I am very proud of the work that he has done and continues to do on a daily basis".
