West Shore RCMP are searching for a missing man after an unoccupied boat was reported on the evening of April 22.
The boat was found in the ocean at Finlayson Arm, past Goldstream Provincial Park. It was visible from the shore near the 200-block of the Trans-Canada Highway.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria (JRCC) was contacted, and Canadian Armed Forces and Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue (SAR) teams were deployed.
An extensive search began the night of April 22 and continued into the morning of April 23, using both boats and aircraft.
Police determined there were three occupants on the boat, all of whom were thrown overboard during an accident. Two of the occupants – a mother and an infant – were located on shore and rescued. They have since been taken to hospital for care.
The third occupant, 43-year-old Ryan Mazar, remains missing.
Mazar is described as a Caucasian man, between 6'2" and 6'5", approximately 230 pounds. He has brown eyes and short grey hair styled in a mohawk. He has a large nautical-themed tattoo on his left bicep and forearm, and a tattoo in the shape of Vancouver Island on his right arm.
JRCC Victoria and SAR, along with West Shore RCMP, continue to search the area near Finlayson Arm. The public can expect a large presence of search and rescue personnel, including aircraft patrols.
Anyone with information that could assist in locating Mazar is asked to call West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264.
