Two Chase residents couldn't catch a break when an apparent malfunction resulted in a bicycle-versus-pedestrian crash.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 8, the RCMP were called to an assault on Pine Street, where a witness reported that a cyclist had deliberately crashed into an elderly man, knocking him to the ground. Attending officers conducted interviews with the victim, suspect and witness. 

"The cyclist advised she was hurrying to the store to purchase milk when her brakes failed. She swerved to avoid the collision but accidentally clipped the pedestrian," Const. Sarah Van Wilgenburg said in a media release. "The pedestrian was struck from behind and didn't know what happened."

Police tested the bike's brakes and confirmed they didn't function properly, and found no evidence to support the allegation the collision was deliberate.

The man suffered a bump on the head and minor abrasions, but an assessment by paramedics determined he did not require further treatment.
