Another wildfire has popped up in the Shuswap following Monday morning's thunderstorm.
The spot-sized (.009 hectares) Bruhn Creek wildfire was discovered at the southwest end of Adams Lake on July 22. It was one of several new wildfires discovered in the Shuswap Monday morning after a thunderstorm brought lightning and some rain to the region.
In a 1 p.m. update on the 220-hectare Mara Mountain wildfire, the largest out-of-control wildfire in the Shuswap, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District said it is not currently a threat to any surrounding communities. Out of precaution, the Shuswap Emergency Program is staging a Structure Protection Unit in Sicamous for that community and Swansea Point.
"The Sicamous Fire Department has developed plans for the protection of the community and continues to monitor the progression of the fire," reads the update. "Sicamous and Swansea Point fire crews are ready to deploy should there be a need for structural fire protection."
The CSRD also cautioned that wildfire smoke is expected to increase in the area over the next 24 to 48 hours.
"Be mindful of the air quality in your area and take steps to minimize your exposure, especially if you are in a higher risk group, such as children, seniors, those working outdoors and people with respiratory conditions," advised the CSRD.
