Thirty-one years after surpassing Gordie Howe and standing alone atop the NHL's all-time goals list, Wayne Gretzky now has some company.

Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin made history by scoring his 893rd and 894th goals on Friday night (April 5) against the Chicago Blackhawks at Capital One Arena, in front of the Washington crowd.

Ovechkin notched his first goal of the night less than four minutes into the opening frame, a one-time from the bottom of the left circle that beat Blackhawks netminder Spencer Knight. It also marked Ovechkin's 40th goal of the 2024-2025 season.

The 39-year-old's second goal, a power-play marker, came at 6:13 of the third period.

Washington would go on to win 5-3.

Gretzky, who famously broke Howe's goals record in March 1994 as a member of the Los Angeles Kings, was in attendance for the game.

Ovechkin's first chance to surpass Gretzky will come Sunday, April 6, against the New York Islanders at USB Arena. Puck drop is at 9:30 a.m., Pacific time.
