Cross-country skiing is one of the winter activities enjoyed by the Shuswap Lady Striders.

A group of more than 200 Shuswap women continues to make strides through fitness and friendship.

Now in its 35th year, the Shuswap Lady Striders (SLS) has seen continued growth in membership and outdoor activities enjoyed by its members.

SLS was founded by Jos Penner and Maro Hartling with a group of enthusiastic women who wanted to train for the ÁðÁ§ÉñÉç Fresh Experience 5- and 10-kilometre run.

"In 1989 the running group expanded to include a walking group and has grown from approximately 30 to over 200 members today," reads Shuswap Lady Striders (SLS) media release. SLS embers can participate in activities on a weekly basis such as hiking, walking, cycling and jogging in the summer to walking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter, with "various

levels to many of the activities so everyone can participate, enjoy or challenge themselves."

The group also hosts a monthly breakfast (the next is on Nov. 7), which rotates between local restaurants, a Christmas luncheon as well and two potluck evenings,  "which always have the most amazing variety and delicious culinary creations brought by those in attendance."

The Striders also support local initiatives, such as assisting with providing food and hot chocolate for the annual School District 83 elementary school Pirate Loppet at Larch Hills. There are travel nights where Striders share their adventures with slide shows.

Membership is $20 annually. Another perk of being a club member includes discounts at local businesses including Skookum Cycle, Eco Treats, Tony O’s Outfitters, Kintec Salmon Arm, Wearabouts, Salmon Arm, Lakeside Health, Pink Cherry, Meadow Brae, Samson Cleaning Supply, for the upcoming year, Hartty Clothing.

"The support of these amazing local businesses is a wonderful bonus to the Club membership and much appreciated," said SLS.

For more information, visit shuswapladystriders.ca and/or the group's page on Facebook. You can also stop by the Mall at Piccadilly between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Club members will be there with information and taking memberships for the coming year.
