A set of original works by UBCO students and alumni now adorns 琉璃神社鈥檚 Cultural District.
The 13 colourful street banners adorn lamp posts along the Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA) commons and the art walk.
It is a partnership program between the city and UBC Okanagan鈥檚 (UBCO) Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies. The program began in 2020 to create opportunities for local artists during pandemic-related facility closures.
An exhibition opening celebration is scheduled for June 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the RCA, which will showcase banners from the past four years as well as an outdoor youth mural, and indoor exhibitions.
鈥淲e are fortunate to be part of a community with immense talent,鈥 said Christine McWillis, cultural services manager for the city. 鈥淭hrough this partnership, we are proud to support local and emerging artists and have an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to engage with their works,鈥
Some banners incorporate augmented reality allowing three-dimensional animations. It鈥檚 part of the鈥淧ress Play!鈥濃痯roject for undergraduate students.
鈥淎rt is a reflection of life,鈥 explained Shawn Serfas, head of Department of Creative Studies at UBCO. 鈥淎s our students are going through our program, we engage them in the community in a variety of ways.鈥
