A walk to remember: Central Okanagan rescue dog honoured

Chase joined Central Okanagan Search and Rescue in 2021 with handler Terry Downs

An estimated 150 people came out to remember Chase "the wonder dog" from Central Okanagan Search and Rescue on July 25.

Earring Trail in Myra Bellevue Provincial Park is what the canine's handler Terry Downs said was his favourite.

The trail has been sponsored by COSAR and the team hiked the trail in remembrance of Chase.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue was joined by other search and rescue organizations, dog lovers, and community members at the park's day use area off Stewart Road E in 琉璃神社 at 6 p.m. to celebrate the life of the beloved black lab.

A donation was also made to the organization in the amount of $3,675 from Ray Imbeau and Barb Kitz. The pair collects cans and bottles every year and donates the proceeds to COSAR.

After the hike, attendees enjoyed some socialization and a barbecue. A cake adorned with a picture of Chase was also served.

Downs thanked those who attended the celebration on Facebook, writing, "Chase loved his people and knew when to have his game face on and get to work or just be there to share the SAR story with his community. He will be missed but not forgotten. On behalf of Barrett and I, words can鈥檛 express our gratitude, appreciation and love for all those Chase has met, made laugh, brought comfort to and found during his short life. A special thanks to those who travelled to be there in person, and those that made sure to send their love from afar."

Chase died suddenly on March 7. The black lab had been an important member of the search and rescue team since joining in 2021.
